Ohio law indicates that, in certain circumstances, an individual may petition the court for treatment in lieu of incarceration.  A formal psychological evaluation by a forensic psychologist most often is part of the petition.  Additionally, substance abuse evaluations sometimes are included as part of understanding the larger clinical picture of individuals who will be facing trials and/or plea bargains.

Substance abuse evaluations can be of interest to various members of the legal system.  Probation officers, CSB protective service members, home study personnel, prosecutors, and defense attorneys serve as examples of professionals with potential vested interests in knowing the outcomes of substance abuse evaluations.  The psychological evaluation typically involves a thorough record review, psychological testing, and a clinical interview.  As with all forensic psychological evaluations, obtaining collateral contact information also may be warranted.
